The beautiful town of Pitigliano situated on a steep tufa rock, 313 metres above sea level. The area of Pitigliano has the typical Tuscan landscape with small farmhouses on soft hills is rarely and small creeks that have cut steep valleys into the landscape and there is a lot of woodland. Southern Tuscany was once one of the most important centres of the Etruscans. There are numerous cave tombs cut deep into the tufa that are today used as cellars and sheds.  Unfortunately there is little show of the Roman but under the town houses are cellars in use which have lots of little niches, in which 2000 years ago the urns of the dead used to stand. In mediaeval times, from the 9th century on, the Langobard family Aldobrandesci ruled the region of Pitigliano. After 1312 the Orsini family took over and from 1604 the Medici's. For many centuries there was a large and important Jewish community, that influenced the cultural life of the town together with the local population. Jewish Ghetto, with its Synagogue is still present in the historical centre of the town.
The charming hamlet of Sovana was once the most important lace in the area, till the seat of the bishop moved to Pitigliano. Later it was virtually inhabited for a long period. Today it's one of the most beautiful and peaceful of places to visit, with the Piazza del Pretorio being an architectural example and at the very end of the village is the Cathedral in Roman style. Go on to the birthplace of Hildebrand who in 1077, as pope Gregorio, VII let the German emperor, Henry IV come to Canossa and wait standing barefooted in the snow. Sovana is especially famous for its Roman-Etruscans necropolis, of which quite a lot can still be visited. The most impressive is the Tomba Ildebranda, one of the biggest Etruscan tomb constructions to date.

Tour ends at 4.30 p.m. Cost for 6 persons 80 euros each.
